Websites 101: Into the World of Websites

website (also written as web site) is a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. Notable examples are wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web.

Let’s have a look at the different types of websites;

Types of Websites

There are primarily 3 types of Websites.

  • Blog Website

The personal blogs started during the 90s as digital journals and online diaries where users shared about their daily life and events. Personal Blogs is the appropriate example of a blog website.

Mine is an example of personal blog.

  • Company Profile Website

Company website provides with the details of the business of the company along with the hours of operation, contact and location details, and other relevant information.

There are 2 types of company profile websites;

  • Static Website

Static websites are made using HTML platform where users cannot change anything by themselves from the backend.

  • Dynamic Website

In case of dynamic website, it can be developed either on WordPress based or Custom based platform.

Examples of company websites are SocialNaxa, PromotEdge, etc.

  • E-Commerce Website

E-Commerce websites showcases exclusive product pages with Call to Action (CTA) buttons like “Add to Cart” until the shopper is ready to make the payment, place the order and checkout of the E-Commerce store.

Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra are examples of some of the E-Commerce websites.

E-Commerce Websites can be further divided into 3 types.

Types of E-Commerce Websites

Type 1: WooCommerce

WooCommerce is one of the secure, flexible, open source eCommerce solutions that online stores use to design a website.

Type 2: WordPress

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) platform written in PHP and paired with a MySQL database.

Type 3: Custom PHP

Custom PHP accounts for PHP code that you write for your own needs that may account for custom functions, objects, classes etc. 

Websites of Other Formats

Apart from these 3 types of websites, there are some other formats as well;

Magazine Website

In the last 20 years, the magazine industry has changed from a print-only platform to a more promising digital format. Magazine website features articles, photos and videos that are informational and educational.

 Examples of these websites can be Wired, etc.

Entertainment Website

Entertainment websites are designed in such a way that would be easy to navigate and the information can be updated frequently in order to keep the users coming back to the site for more information. They can be made more engaging by using dynamic content, such as videos, podcasts, slideshows, etc. apart from the still images.

Examples of these websites are YouTube, Hotstar, Amazon Prime, etc.

Pro Tip: Use of HD quality images and videos are recommended on these type of sites.

News & Media Website

Unlike blogs, News & Media Websites simply focus on journalism rather than users’ personal interests. News & Media websites help you create a trending news outlet online, or special interest magazine such as for different industries, or hobbies. These types of websites generally have a clean, minimal structure and layout so page elements can properly highlight published articles.

Examples of these websites can be Forbes, Entrepreneur, etc.

Educational Website

Educational websites include websites that have games, videos or topic related resources that act as tools to enhance learning and supplement classroom teaching. These websites help the process of learning more entertaining and attractive to the student, especially in today’s age. Plus, with the impact of Covid-19, this has influenced greatly.

Meritnation, BYJUs are some popular examples of educational website.

Portfolio Website

Portfolio type websites are used to showcase our work to the outside world. It is an ideal website for artists and writers

Some examples of portfolio websites are Matt Pamer, Josh Miller 

Non –Profit Website

Non-profit types of websites aim to provide information for people to donate. A good non-profit type of website must have an impeccable sales copy. It should have the capability and bring out the feel to entice the users to donate. The process should also be straightforward.

Directory and Contact Pages Website

A directory or contact page is a place where users can connect with you or others.

This type of website works well when you want to list a repository of businesses or people within an organization.

The nature of an organization creates an opportunity for a directory website.

Examples of directory websites are IndiaMart.

Social Media Websites

There are approximately 2.77 billion people on social media with dozens of different platforms available. No matter who your target audience is, you’ll probably find them on any social media platform. Although you can’t redesign the platforms themselves, you do have some control over the look of your page, and you can create content that drives social media shares.

Examples of Social Media websites can be LinkedIn.

Niche Website

Niche websites are about specific topics where you can zero-in on your audience, or you have an audience with a specific interest. A niche website can help you gain more followers and customers or clients because you can structure the website to target a specific group of people.

Examples of Niche websites can be 10Beasts.com.

Membership Website

A membership website is another one of the types of websites to build for a possible upcoming project. Membership websites can offer free and premium registrations or both. You can also have a membership site where the entire content isn’t available at once but is released over a period of time.

Examples of Membership websites can be Food Blogger Pro.

How to Build a World Class Dynamic Website in 2021

Or rather, I can put the statement or ask in a much better way. What are the critical parameters that need to be kept in mind while developing any format of websites?

Here is a list of them.

Making a static website will require few of these parameters. But, a dynamic website will have all the parameters.

Get a domain name

The basic of getting a website done is to have a domain name. The domain name is just like the (virtual) address of your home. Dot com (.com) domains are preferable over any other domains like dot net (.net), dot org (.org) or even dot in (.in).

Pro Tip: Make sure that you own your own domain name and have full control over it. Try to register your domain name all by yourself, rather than someone else doing it for you.

Get hosting

Once you have your domain ready, hosting is your next milestone that you need to achieve.  Many people often try to save money and go for cheap or even free hosting. I would suggest never ever do that.

When you are taking the pain to start a business or even a personal blog, try to invest something to get something better and profitable.

SSL Certificate

The SSL Certificate acts as a security barrier for your website. There is typically 1 SSL Certificate per site. It serves a 2 way security purpose;

First, it authenticates your identity

Second, it allows for the privacy of the transaction information that even includes your Debit or Credit Card Number.

Decide on a content management system (CMS)

CMS or a content management system allows you to update their website using any browser. You can do multiple activities starting from adding a Page, to uploading a photo, and even embed a video from your YouTube channel.

Although, there are plenty of CMS platforms available on the web, I strongly recommend using WordPress as the software is free and open source.  WordPress don’t require the knowledge of coding and thus, it’s also user friendly.

Make it mobile friendly

Nowadays people are more inclined towards mobile. With the advent of Smartphone, the uses of desktops and laptops have been reduced drastically. Both people and businesses are searching for products and solutions on the go. Therefore, businesses with mobile friendly website are on the rise and will go the extra mile while doing businesses.

Make it about your customers

Business is all about your customers. You are doing business to serve your customers and that’s the ultimate TRUTH. If your customers are not happy with your products and services, nothing can scale your business.

Optimize your site for search engines and people

While writing on the web, always keep in mind that people will bring you business, not the search engine. So, choose your words very carefully. Choose words that would help your customers to find you. Otherwise, you might be caught on the wrong foot.

Images / Graphics matters

Use good stock photography like Unsplash for your website or blog. Images could be illustrative images or photographs. Never use photos clicked on your Smartphone. Quality always matters.

The website must generate leads for your business. It would help in boosting as well as increasing the sales of your company. Every single page should have a Call to Action button like “Contact us today for a free consultation” or “Buy Now”.

Build your email list

Use a Query Form, on the Home Page and on the Contact Page, where your visitors can share their requirement. In this way, you can collect a handsome amount of email addresses which you can later use to optimize your business promotion.

Make it easy to contact you

Having a contact number or an email address for your company website is very essential. This is how people can place order or connect you for solutions to their problems. Make sure you have “Contact Us” button on your navigation bar.

Reach your Target Audience

Knowing how to connect with your target audience online is critical for achieving your brand’s digital strategy. Rather than forcing your audience to come to you, consider going to the places your audience spends their quality time when they’re online.

Link Google Analytics with your site to measure both the quality and quantity your site is receiving. It provides a comprehensive analysis of all the parameters on the site starting from traffic patterns, geographic dominance of the visitors and their behavior.
